Pride. Honor. They had always been worth something in the past. Nowadays, no one seems to care,” the young guard mused as he stood his watch outside of the president’s office.

His thoughts often overtook his attention as few visitors ever traversed the hallway. He had grown to enjoy the solitude and the meditative moments that it provided; when he was on duty, he was free to think and to dream.

“Soon,” he thought. “Soon I will leave this place and take my beautiful bride-to-be far, far away. Perhaps we will settle somewhere in the west, like America or Canada. No…not Canada. It is too cold there,” he thought, shaking his head.
