Neither man spoke much on the ride out to the lake. They remained silent even as the boat was released from its trailer and set aloft in the still water. Despite the many years since their last fishing venture, the men were able to move quickly and efficiently—their hands trained through countless expeditions.

The soft quiescence of the morning was deceptive; it led one to think that all was well in the world. Tim broke the tranquil quietude as he choked the engine to life, listening to the small onboard motor chortle as it revved to life. The whine of the boat reduced to a low hum as it traversed the lake, bringing the two men towards their favorite fishing spot near its center.
