Tim felt his heart sink the moment his eyes opened; spreading out before him was the all-too-familiar plain of crimson sand. He noticed immediately, though, that something was awry.

He saw himself standing, looking out upon the blasted landscape, but instead of feeling the sensation of walking, he remained stationary; his jaw dropped as he watched his doppelganger begin to walk.

“It’s different this time, somehow…” he mused.

Festering pools bubbled along the ground as thunder bellowed and lightning flashed, threatening to destroy a mountain in the distance. He watched all of this with a dawning sense of déjà vu; he knew what was coming next with each passing moment.
