The world faded in by steps. First came the dull ache that spread through her body. Then the rhythmic beeping that matched her own heart. The antiseptic smell. And the feeling of rubber tubing resting against her arm. A lawn mower started up somewhere in the distance.

Jamie opened her eyes and looked around at the small hospital room. It seemed normal. Chair, IV, heart monitor, cheap painting of a vase of flowers on the wall. But something seemed off. Her gown seemed normal, complete with the open back. The walls were plaster with white paint. She glanced down at her wrist and noticed that she had no identification bracelet. She was about to try and call forth the spirit of the place but the door opened.
