Kensei watched the Canvil home from the tree across the street, waiting to make sure nothing bad lurked in the house. It was a single story brick building with a one car garage and a finely manicured lawn. The door had been broken in and yellow police tape crisscrossed over the dark hole left behind. She saw no sign of a yard spirit, but some sort of spirit seemed to be moving around inside the house.
When no cars remained in sight, Kensei crept across the street. She avoided the pools of light provided by street lamps and made her way to the front door. She detached just enough of the police tape to allow her to squeeze through the rest and enter the house. From deeper within, she heard a man quietly sobbing. She took each step with great caution, barely able to see in the darkness of the house...
