The security guard rolled by on his Segway, patrolling the perimeter. Kensei watched as he passed— waiting for him to gain some distance before she ran across the street—then launched herself up the side of the ten-foot-high chain-link fence and scrambled up and over it. She hit the other side at a run and kept her head low. From the edge of her vision, she saw the light from the guard's flashlight pan over the patch of fence she'd just jumped.

She couldn't believe it was this hard to break into a high school. Normally she had help, but the spirit of the school wasn't responding to her summons from outside, so this required access to the heart of matters.
