Jamie sat at her desk, the music of AKB48 blasting from her earbuds while she read her algebra textbook. Or, tried to read. Really she just stared at the word "quadratic" while she brooded over how badly her mom was going to react to finding out she had been in a fight.

Light poured into the room as her dad opened the door. Jamie pulled one earbud out and looked over.

"Your mom wants you downstairs," her dad said. He sounded tired, and she imagined he'd already gone a few rounds in her defense. Gloria Hattori's temper was the thing of legends. "She's been yelling for you for a while. I told her I'd get you."

Jamie thumbed off her MP3 player and followed him out of the room. As she trudged down the stairs, the smell of roast beef filled her...
