Jamie stepped away from Carmichael, raised her hands up in surrender and turned to face the man. She realized that the voice was Principal Mueller.

"What's going on here?" the principal demanded, interposing himself between the two of them.

"He attacked me," Jamie said while pointing at the jock, who now had blood running from his nose and ears. As Principal Mueller turned to look at Carmichael, the young man fell over.

Carmichael glared at Jamie from his seat on the far side of the office lobby. His face was puffing up and bloody toilet paper stuck out from his nostrils. Nearby, the thin and elderly receptionist, Ms. Holmgren, typed away on her keyboard.

"Your name is Carmichael, right?" Jamie asked, curiosity killing her.
