Jamie and Parker circled one another in the garage, Parker armed with a foil and Jamie with a bamboo shinai. Each took turns probing with feints without drawing close. Finally Jamie ducked under the tip of the fencing foil, pushed Parker's right arm back with her own left, and cut at Parker's ribs with her shinai. Parker responded with a hip check that knocked Jamie into a bicycle resting against the wall of the garage. Jamie fell to the concrete floor, and Parker stood over her with her foil leveled at Jamie's face.

"I win!" Parker declared.

Jamie lifted her kendo helmet off and replied, "You cheat."

"Cheat? How did I cheat?" Parker removed her fencing mask and scratched at the back of her head. "All's fair in love and war ... and sparri...
