Chapter 2

My mother died when I was five years old.  She was a nurse, which a lot of times meant she had to work at night.  One night she was coming home and didn’t make it.  A drunk driver ran a light and smashed into the driver’s side door at sixty miles an hour.  If there’s any comfort to be had it’s that she probably died on impact.

Of course I didn’t know any of that at the time.  I only found out the details a few years ago when I broke into Daddy’s study and read a copy of the police report.  When it happened I was asleep.  Jessica was sleeping across the hall.  Since she was twelve, they woke her up to have her keep an eye on me while Dad went to the hospital.

I woke up the next morning the same time...
