watched the time, nervously waiting for Billy to arrive. Creeping doubts entered my head, which I did my best to conceal from both myself and my sisters, not wanting to fuel the fire of their laughter any more than I already had.
   But right on time, I watched his car pull up in front of the house, and with a great deal of relief, I went to the door to meet him. He looked good standing there in the doorway. He wasn't but a few inches taller than I was, but he had a compact strength that came from his military training, a confident way to his walk that added to his overall stature.
