I hoped he had gotten away. With a tight grip on my upper arm, I was escorted to the squad car and forced inside. The door slammed firmly shut behind me. I was caught and there was no getting away.
From the window, I could see the other squad cars up the road, while my two captors stood outside the squad car, talking, doing an occasional indifferent sweep of the area. Eventually, I saw the other cars on the move again, with their spotlights now dark. Maybe they had caught him, maybe he had gotten away. Perhaps they had given up since it was likely that I was the one they were actually looking for. David would have been nothing more than collateral damage.
As soon as the cop slid into the squad car he began with his questions, “Name?”
