The Call

Karla didn't seem surprised that I had called. She asked me,

"How's Blake?"

Her friendly question had a sense of urgency in it. I answered, leaving out the details,

"He's fine. A little sad, but fine."

Karla didn't waste any time. She said,

"Honey, look..."

I heard a sound in the background that sounded like a slight sob. Karla said, continuing on,

"I've liked you for a long while. I don't understand it, but..."

I cut her off. I couldn't let her keep talking. I had to tell her the truth. I said,
