One glance into the murky water in front of my tree had me hurrying back into the structure of living wood. I was a mess. The one responsible for my messiness was gone and so would most likely never be made to pay for his crimes against me. I couldn’t risk anyone seeing me like this. Never mind that none of the humans had even looked my way yet, they could any moment! And what would they see if they did? A bruised woman sitting beside an abused tree. They'd probably think I'd tripped on the curb, fallen against the tree, damaging us both. There was nothing to do but hide until I could heal and get the lay of my new land.
