It’s Halloween tomorrow. Apparently back in the old days, before we Irish introduced the festival to the Americans and in return got pumpkins to carve, we used to carve turnips as lanterns for this spooky autumn festival. I find pumpkins hard enough. If I carved a turnip I’d lose fingers.

 

Jamie and Hannah love the idea of pumpkin lanterns yet each year I am the one left to scoop out the slimy pumpkin innards and all those seeds. The social media posts order me to toast the seeds for a healthy snack but let’s be honest there’s no such thing at Halloween and nobody has time to wash the gloop off the seeds when there’s a house to decorate and face-painting to practise.

 

I’ll be disposing of dentis...
