Pet minding is harder than I expected.

Hannah has lost her moody edge now that we’re working on The Sewing Mama together. She positively sparkled when she heard I turned down the gift shop job to be at home. I can’t help wondering if some of her moods this year have been down to her not wanting me to go back to work full-time.

Then she pulled out her best manners and some world-class pleading when she arrived back from a play-date at Emily’s house with a surprising request.

“Chloe’s going away for the weekend and she has nobody to mind her hamster, Humpty. Can we mind him, please? Pretty please?”

“Chloe? You were at Emily’s house.” E...
