Tori started haunting the bridge the very first moment a response from friends on Hope might be physically possible even though she knew it wasn’t likely. The campaign they’d sent out through Brian’s friends would need time to work.

Pointing every sensor she could toward Hope, Tori looked for anything that might be communication outside of official channels—any anomaly that might be someone trying to get through.

And, bizarrely enough, she found something—not communication, exactly, but definitely an anomaly, or at least an oddness in the way the shuttle radar bounced back to her. Tori might not have paid any attention if the odd refraction pattern wasn’t moving in a path directly toward them.
