Mr. Yi’s words hung heavy in the air.

Tori wondered if he could possibly be right. Were humans all parasites? Did they inflict such horrors on the universe that they deserved to go extinct?

She hadn’t come to any conclusions when the warmer beeped, and Brian handed her meal over. Once he’d set it down, he turned toward Mr. Yi. “Parasite? You? Mr. Yi, nobody who takes as good care of plants as you do could be considered a parasite.”

Lu laughed and Gabe smiled. Even Tori felt a little lighter. She pulled the tray of food closer to her and scarfed half the tray before noticing the tangy flavor and slowing down enough to enjoy it.

Clearly, she wanted to live, too.

But, then again, so did parasites.
