The numbers came to her in a dream, glowing golden and white across a sky darker than the darkest monitor.

Some were equations she’d seen in her math classes; some were smatches of math she’d seen in science vids and old books. Some seemed entirely new. But they danced in the darkness, forming suggestive patterns, new permutations that might make a difference for something—not that she could remember what that something was.

Tori reached out to touch one.

Just as it seemed within her grasp, she jerked awake, straining against the safety straps meant to keep her in her bunk if the grav webs lost power.

Numbers still danced in her head, and now, with her mind awake, Tori could see how the equations that frolicked in her dreams were the same ones she’d been...
