Gabe didn’t know how to ask the others if they’d join him for church, but he didn’t feel right trying to do it completely by himself, either. He tried to sing, but he couldn’t remember more than half the words to any song. He tried to do a little Bible study with the random verses he’d been copying whenever he could catch one of the broadcasts the Catholics put out on radio waves, but none of the verses connected with each other—or his life, and the homilies that had come with them didn’t make sense to him.

He leaned back against the cupboards in the kitchen/common area and closed his eyes.
