If Brian had been with his usual group of friends, he would have assumed they were playing some kind of sick joke on him. But Lu wasn’t really into practical jokes, and neither Gabe Chin nor Tori Jackson were friends.

They weren’t the kind of people who would play sick jokes on mere acquaintances, either.

Sure, Tori hated him, but it was more of a glare at him every time he looked at Lu kind of hate. She wouldn’t make people think they were going to die just for the fun of it. At least he didn’t think she would.

And the reason he wasn’t friends with Gabe is the guy hardly had any sense of humor at all. Always so earnest and serious. He wouldn’t scare the living daylights out of someone just for the heck of it.
