In the wild, crushing, ride of the first few minutes after the shuttle crashed through the bay floor, Tori had all she could do to wedge herself into a tight enough space that she didn’t get too jerked around.

Tuck your head, she told herself. Fasten down loose objects. Get that hatch all the way sealed.

She hadn’t even moved to act on that last thought when a sickening crunch knocked her sideways. She rammed into some engine part.

Suddenly, breathing became impossible. She gasped, trying to suck in air, but nothing came.
