Sam froze, resisting the urge to wilt under all the hostile stares. He wished he were better at thinking on his feet.

“A pity,” Beatrice Miller said.

Sam looked at her curiously. Her voice sounded sympathetic, but her eyes were unsettling, calculating. “What kinds of changes do you think Mandy could negotiate for here?”

Ms. Miller shrugged. “GenM would rather not have its business splashed across the news, so I imagine the girl could write her own ticket. Or you could if you think you could persuade her to settle.”

Sam’s mind whirled. He felt like he was being played but didn’t know how to get out of the trap. “I’m not sure GenM can give Mandy anything she wants right now."
