Eleanor felt pretty good about how they’d handled her father that morning—right up until the moment Mandy stumbled into the Greeley apartment where Eleanor was tutoring Kali and the boys.

Tears streamed down Mandy’s face. Eleanor stood up from the table so quickly, she knocked over the stool she’d been sitting on. “Mandy, what’s wrong?”

“I couldn’t go back there. I just couldn’t.”

“To your internship?”
