In the end, Sam only convinced Grandma to come off the wall by refusing to show her his plans for shoring up the garden unless she came down. If she wanted to approve or disapprove what he did, she’d let them move her to safety.
From the way Grandma railed at him, you’d have thought he was committing some kind of extreme elder abuse. But in the dim light of late sleep cycle, she finally gave in, letting him strap her into a harness like the one he’d rigged up for himself.
He tied them both to the crane he’d set up, and then held Grandma as if she were one of his younger cousins and he was carrying her in a carnival game.
As Kali cranked the pulley, taking their weight off the wall, some of the lattice crumbled down into the floor that had given way.
