Though Sam’s heart leapt into his throat every time the corridors creaked, he managed to make it back to Grandma’s garden with his load still balanced on the pallet.
“Sam, is that you?” Kali called as he maneuvered his way through the archway into the garden.
“Shh,” Sam hissed back. “Do you want someone to come check on what we’re doing in here?”
“Yeah, it’s you all right,” Kali said, a bit more quietly. “What took you so long?”
“Making a decent plan, finding the materials, getting them back here. I think we have what we need now to make this work the way Grandma wants it.” Not that they had it where they needed it.
