Eleanor got Sam’s message just after curfew. At first, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to help. No way would her parents give her special permission to leave the apartment after lights out, especially to go to Old Golden Heights.

Then she realized Sam didn’t want her to visit. He just wanted help researching Old Earth building techniques. Eleanor couldn’t tell why, but Sam’s message was intense, so she sought out Mandy, who had gone to bed early.

“Why?” Mandy asked with a stretch and a yawn when Eleanor explained what Sam wanted.

“He didn’t say. All he said was that it was something to do with his grandma’s garden.”

“That place that was in the news? Isn’t it in an unstable section of the ship?”
