When Eleanor got to Sam’s place for her second day of tutoring, only three small boys sat around the table. “Where’s Kali?” she asked.

Ray, the middle-sized boy, shrugged.

“Seriously, where is she?” Eleanor repeated.

“Don’t know, don’t care,” Dion, the biggest kid, said.

Eleanor chewed on her lower lip. She’d expected Kali to be here, but the girl was involved in half a dozen school-related activities and might have a legitimate reason to be gone. Bringing in a parent at this point would probably be overkill.

But what if Kali wasn’t at something official, and something happened to her? Eleanor would be responsible.

Probably the girl was fine, but Eleanor should probably check.
