Sam didn’t hear from Eleanor that night, but the next day at school, she found him before their first period.

What is that picture you sent me?” she asked.

Sam’s mouth felt suddenly dry, and his mind went blank. “The rose bush?”

“Those are roses? No wonder they were such a big deal in olden times.”

Eleanor smiled at him in a way that made his stomach flip. Sam smiled back. “They’re better in person. You can’t smell the picture.”

“They have a scent?”

Sam nodded.

“Then I definitely want to come see them. Tonight after you get back from your work detail? I don’t have to be home early or anything.”
