Sam tried to ignore the pitying look Kali gave him when they got to the main corridor outside school the next morning. Neither one of them could see Eleanor anywhere.
“I hate to say I told you so,” Kali said.
“But you can’t seem to stop yourself.”
Kali shook her head and gave him a lopsided smile. “You going to be OK out here?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
She shrugged.
“Just go,” Sam said.
Kali sauntered inside, pulling a battered trillium from her pack as she walked. The metal on the pipes was going thin in a few places, and Kali complained that the tone was off, but there was no way they could afford a new one. Maybe Sam could scrounge together enough scrap to fix up the thin spots, but...
