They hadn’t gone far into the rows of golden wheat before Sam noticed streaks of black on some of the plants. “What is that?” he asked Eleanor.

She shrugged. “Some kind of mold or disease, I think. They get that way when there’s too much water.”

“And they’re getting too much water because the sprinkler system’s broken.”

“Presumably.”

“Do we know whether the problem is the program that controls the watering or some kind of physical leak?”

“If Mrs. Jackson knew, she would have told us.”

Sam sighed. Wouldn’t want the job to be easy. “Maybe we should check the computers first. They should at least be fairly accessible.”
