By our first game, I had patched my tires two more times. Andre kept his jeers to himself, so that was an improvement. Our first game of the year put us up against the rich private school. We had three in the area: girls, boys, and co-ed. Only the boys had a varsity team. Girls and co-ed stopped in middle school. Which made it all the more embarrassing that I hadn’t recognized Jackson Duke. 

A local legend - Duke led St. Raphael’s Academy to Nationals every year he’d been on the team. Not that they had been doing poorly before then. They went more often than not, but two years earlier, they had to fight for it with our school and Charlemange Hall.
