     The dog, whose girl called him Jasper, lifted his snout, nostrils twitching, and decided that he would have to bite. Not yet, though. If he bit too soon he would lose his girl. That's what happened to Jasmine, his sister. She had known the visiting man-child's smell whispered of bad things. She had bitten before those things had come to light. Jasper's girl's father had taken Jasmine away in the car and never brought her back.
