I studied hard before I came here. This was the future I wanted so badly. We all wanted it. This place was the best hope for a home built with care and thought. We would be a shining light that would guide our families and our friends to a better life. Utopia would become a reality instead of a distant dream that the cynical would sneer at while the rest of us sighed longingly.
Selection and placement were not promised in the cost of my schooling even though the price meant that I would never afford training for another career. Competition was fierce and slots on board the ships were few. I studied, and I read, and I dreamed beautiful dreams of a new future while my stomach tied in knots and my brain whirred with worry every night as I tried to sleep.
