The Tick and The Tock

            “Enjoying the sun?” Gavin stood in Lilly’s driveway—black concrete so hot he thought the rubber of his torn sneakers would melt. He regretted leaving the AC of his car.

            “Working on my tan.”

            “You’ll never have a tan, you’re like a big glass of milk.”

            She sighed, eyelashes fluttering the same way grass fronds did in the wind. He was right, but she would never admit it.
