Adelynn had to throw most of her body weight behind the door to get it to budge. It moved slowly, groaning against its hinges as it opened.
She tried to peek inside, but had to shut her eyes immediately. Light came from the room - harsh and unexpected. Adelynn turned her head to the side, her eyes pressed closed against the sudden and painful brightness, longing for the dim atmosphere of the hallway that they’d grown accustomed to.
“Who’s there?” came a dry voice that Adelynn recognized immediately as Neba’s.
“It’s me,” Adelynn said, not realizing her voice had gone hoarse. She cleared her throat and willed her eyes to open so that she could peer into the room, past the edge of the heavy door. She couldn’t make out much more than what she guessed was Neb...
