I left the basement a few minutes later, reeking of fire retardant and repeating their names - both their Firewalker names and mortal names - to myself over and over, so I wouldn’t forget.

I crept through the house, quiet and still in the early morning. As I moved toward my room, I made plans to take a shower before going to bed. But before I could reach the bathroom, I heard my parents’ voices drifting under the door of their bedroom.

Stalling, I crouched, and inched closer to their door. I put my ear to it and listened.

“ their strongest right now,” my father’s voice was saying.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. They’re stronger by far. But they’re also suffering more.”
