I don’t know why he didn’t kill me that night. I think that the only thing that kept me alive was his curiosity about this human child who knew about Enadell and wasn’t afraid to speak to a Firewalker. Whatever his reasoning, I was lucky. Like he said, I had been foolish to come down to meet him - especially since I had been unarmed. But I didn’t make that mistake again.
I followed the boy and his mother for a couple days, trailing behind them in the cover of forest vegetation and dried brush. It was nearly a week of travel - my food supply was starting to dwindle and I resorted to hunting small animals - before the woman left the boy alone again. It was late in the evening and the boy had found a small pond that he was dipping his feet into.
