It was the heat that Adelynn was first aware of when she began to regain consciousness. She was hot. Her mouth was dry, her skin was feverish, and her body was slick with sweat.
She opened her eyes, expecting to see the noon sun high overhead to explain the sweltering heat. But instead, she saw only the beams of an arching ceiling high above her.
It took her a few moments to take stock of the situation. By the looks of the building, she was in a church or hall of some kind. It appeared big and cavernous. She turned her head to the side to get a better look around her, but stopped the motion almost as soon as she had started it. She winced as the back of her head ached.
