A brief note on gender:
This conversation started up again in my head because I’m listening to an episode of Invisibilia, the one about categories, but it started when a close friend realized he was a man. On the way, he thought he was bigender, and we talked about what that meant, and I began to think about how I felt. At the time, NPR had this borderline callous story about our parents’ generation learning about different genders, and I keep thinking back on it.
When I found the term “demigirl” last year, I started to cry, because I finally found a term for how I felt.
