complex female characters are still simply the property of their male counterparts. There is a hopelessness to it that is reflected in that which strikes down Simon at the end and leaves him destroyed in the hospital corridor. Just like Simon’s torture, there is no end in sight for women; no light at the end of the sexist tunnel. The Gift tells us, in no uncertain terms, that women can lead movies and their characters may be great – but they will always be sacrificed and reduced to bodily functions. Women can conquer the business world, build a marriage, and take charge of their own lives – but the world is still only interested in what lies between their legs.
