The point here, of course, is that movies created by women, or featuring women-led stories are still less likely to be handed a wide theatrical release than their white male-led and created counterparts, and so would generally find more of a home and audience on streaming services anyway. As soon as those white male gatekeepers had to turn to streaming services as a means to keep the lights on, suddenly there’s less of a stigma attached, and films like Promising Young Woman, Nomadland, and One Night in Miami… receive more space, oxygen and coverage than they otherwise would.
