At first glance, Godzilla vs Kong is quintessential male-gaze cinema. Two male ‘monsters’ fight each other for dominance in a patriarchal clash of the ‘titans,’ while very serious and important human men run around and try to figure out what is happening. While this is all true, there is another layer to the story, underpinning all that patriarchy. That layer is all about parent-child relationships, and this provides an interesting counterpoint to the testosterone and chest-beating in a way that flows seamlessly into the final act.
