The horror-comedy genre is a tough nut to crack. It requires perfect balance of pitch and tone; of scares and laughs; of self-awareness and the unknown. Like the pure horror genre, it is known for its sexism, with countless past examples engaging in the shameless objectification and hyper-sexualisation of women suffering violence and terror. The 2019 horror comedy, Ready Or Not, largely succeeds in finding its balance, and eventually avoids some of the bigger misogynist traps – all while crafting a narrative that eviscerates the toxic socio-economic system of white privilege.
