was very much ahead of her time when Reality Bites was released in 1994. She is a contemporary woman who is neither an action hero, nor a wife/mother. She is not a Rom-Com Woman Who Doesn’t Realise How Capable/Beautiful She Is Until A Man Tells Her. She does not need a man to make her feel complete, nor does she spend every scene talking about her romantic interests and how difficult it is to navigate relationships. Her primary focus is her documentary, and paying the bills.

That’s what makes Reality Bites a feminist movie – because that’s reality. That, along with its sharp observations of the damage wrought by reality TV programming is what makes the movie still relevant today - even though Generation X are no longer fresh out of college and searching for their own identit...
