Aside from the overwhelming presentation of the deity as male, most religious stories are led by men – including the Christian tale of Creation (woman being made from Adam’s rib), and the idea of Original Sin, with men presented as the victim of women’s actions. Most organised religion has served to prioritise men and their needs – even in their own structures. Specifically, the Catholic Church argues that it is unable to confer priestly ordination on women, because God hasn’t allowed it. Conveniently, it is the policy of an unseen, unaccountable yet omnipotent male presence that women remain locked out of leadership positions – not the flesh and blood men who reap the benefits of leadership positions and the Church protections that come with them.
