At first glance, the premise of Enola Holmes might sound like just another off-shoot of a male-centric creation, like Ocean’s Eight, for example. This assumption taps into the valid and justified frustration with popular media – that there are too few instances of wholly original lead characters who are women. In the hands of lesser talents, Enola Holmes could well have been doomed to that exact corner of Netflix. But, thanks to the team behind this film, it is, instead, a resounding clarion call on behalf of the overlooked people of history. It’s an echoing cry from womanhood past, reminding us of everything we have to lose.
