>For her part, Sam’s appropriating behaviour is limited to pretending to be married to Jerry in order to attend a therapy group. She and Jerry take up space in the group, and benefit from resources intended for others. Jerry engages in much more appropriation, along with his colleague, Ted Slocum, who is sent by Nyman to ensure Jerry retrieves the pistol. Aside from their initial goal of taking the pistol back to the United States, they exhibit a constant stream of racist micro-aggressions – from expecting everyone in Mexico to accommodate the fact that they only speak English, to rejecting a Chrysler as a hire car and requesting something “more authentic” instead.
