First things first – Oz: The Great And Powerful (2013) is a prequel, of sorts, to the beloved and legendary 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz. Like that film, it is based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz series of novels, but Oz: The Great And Powerful is directed by Sam Raimi, from a screenplay by Mitchell Kapner, and David Lindsay-Abaire.

Now, The Wizard Of Oz is a great film, and is notable for the fact that it features a brave and courageous female lead, who is entirely independent of mind. These things were remarkable in 1939, and the film has been rightly celebrated for it ever since.
