is bluster to mask their real truth, that they themselves are the problem; that they themselves are complicit. Who profits when they soil their own nest? They do. That pointless noise, bluster and projection even extends to religion, with humanity’s need to project our own inadequacies and failings onto an unseen magical being in the next room for judgment and assessment, because we are loathe to do that for ourselves. We are loathe to commit to that kind of introspection.
First Reformed asks the question, can God forgive us? But what Toller needs to know is, can he forgive himself?
